Getting to Know You! Shane Young, Board Member and Rainbow Grants Co-Chair

We’re continuing in sharing interviews with the members of our fantastic volunteer board. This week, get to know our newest board member, and co-chair of the Rainbow Grants selection committee, Shane Young!

How did you first learn of Community One?

I was first introduced to Community One by Karen Arthurton (who is also a Board Member) during recruitment for the Rainbow Grants Allocations Committee in 2019. I became a Board Member with the Community One Foundation as of June 2021. Prior to becoming a Board Member, I served as a community member on the Rainbow Grants Allocations Committee in 2019, and Co-Chair of the Rainbow Grants Allocations Committee in 2020 and 2021. 

Why is Community One important to you?

As a Two-Spirit individual, I hope to use my voice to ensure the voices of Indigenous Two-Spirit kin are supported and recognized through the many opportunities available through the Community One Foundation. Furthermore, to support the Community One Foundation with the meaningful implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) recommendations. 

Do you have a favourite memory/initiative with Community One?

My favourite initiative, to date, is the Rainbow Grants. It is amazing to see the diverse projects submitted and the positives impacts it has on the community as a whole. 

As Community One is a volunteer board, what other roles do you take on in your time?

I am an Assistant Professor of Social Work and Academic Coordinator for the Indigenous Knowledges and Experiences Certificate with Ryerson University. I also sit on the Board of Directors for Native Men’s Residence and Indigenous Friends Association. More information about me can be found at shanenyoung.ca. 

What do you want people to know about Community One Foundation?

We are a diverse Board with vast lived and professional experiences. Additionally, our work is continually inspired by the amazing work being done with 2SLGBTTIQQ communities in the GTA. I strongly encourage all community members to reach out, whether to volunteer, donate, or for a friendly chat.
